The stone water fountain in Bartholomew Street was noted in Oxford Archaeology's Newbury Historic Character Study <1><2>.
The marble back of the drinking fountain has a religious inscription :
"Jesus said 'Whosever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: but whosever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst'. St John C iv V15. 11"
The fountain has been redundant for several years (not seen to be working in the 21st century).
The design of the fountain was agreed by a committee on 2 August 1859 <3>.
