The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read
the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our
online HER enquiry form.
This site is designated as being of national importance and is afforded additional protection. Consult West Berkshire Council's Archaeology team if more information or advice is needed.

Full Description
This is one element of the Grade II Registered Park of Hamstead Marshall, GD1504, the other two elements being the medieval deer park and the remains of the 17th century mansion gardens.
The gardens of Hamstead Lodge encircle the house, those to the south being largely enclosed by a ha-ha, and are mainly 19th century <1>. They contain a series of terraces, some specimen trees, geometrical hedged gardens and a shrubbbery. A box-hedged parterre is sheltered by a listed garden wall, and beyond a lawn estends as far as an iron railing clairvoie flanked by stone piers. An informal pond and a listed octagonal summerhouse are also described in the Register.
Some photographs of the gardens in the 1930s are included in a village history <3>.
The GIS polygon of this garden depicts the boundary on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map <4>, delineating a more formal area from that of the parkland surrounding it.
