The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

This site is designated as being of national importance and is afforded additional protection. Consult West Berkshire Council's Archaeology team if more information or advice is needed.

Full Description

This farm is recorded on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map <1> as noted during a 2005 survey of West Berkshire's historic farmsteads <2>. However it is unclear whether it had a purely agricultural function within the Craven Estate. Its two listed buildings are described as a former dovecote and granary, and an orangery. The dovecote later became Morewood House, but may be present in Kyp's 1709 engraving of a bird's-eye view of Hamstead Marshall, seat of Lord Craven: a rectangular building with roof is shown in the distance behind the formal gardens and avenues <5>.

Stokes <4> notes that there was a timber and carpentry yard there by 1840, with this usage continuing into the 20th century. When the Craven Estate was sold in 1984, Morewood House was restored and altered, and former farm buildings were converted to form a staff cottage.
