The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Summary

Historic farmstead documented in 18th century but no longer in existence

Monument Type(s):

  • FARMSTEAD (18th century to Late 19th century - 1761 AD to 1880 AD)

Full Description

This farm is recorded on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map <1> as noted during a 2005 survey of West Berkshire's historic farmsteads <2>. A cluster of buildings is marked here but not named on both Rocque's map of 1761 <3> and the early 19th century Ordnance Survey Drawing <4>.

The farmstead appears to have been demolished when the Royal Ordnance Factory at Burghfield was constructed in the early-mid 20th century. Archaeological work within AWE Burghfield in the 21st century has revealed evidence of the underlying medieval landscape, and it is likely that Saunderscourt Farm had its origins in this period <5>.
