The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read
the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our

Summary
Historic farmstead perhaps of 18th century date, gentrified in the late 19th century and still partly present in 21st century
Monument Type(s):
- FARMSTEAD (18th century to Late 19th century - 1761 AD? (pre) to 1880 AD (pre))
Full Description
This farm is recorded on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map <1> as noted during a 2005 survey of West Berkshire's historic farmsteads <2>. It is sited on the south side of Crookham Common, overlooking the Enborne Valley, and may be one of the small common edge settlements on Rocque's 1761 map <3>.
Its holding included a dwelling later called Elizabeth Cottage, but in the 1890s a small country house had been constructed on land slightly outside the farmyard. This was named as Foxhold, and was designed by architect Mervyn Macartney for his artist brother. The farm layout was altered, with a probable coach house replacing agricultural buildings, but Elizabeth Cottage was retained. By the 5th Epoch OS of 1971 <5>, three separate holdings are shown: Foxhold House, Little Foxhold which was probably the converted coach house, and Elizabeth Cottage.
Several mid 20th century photographs of Foxhold House and Foxhold Cottage were included in the website Greenham: A Common Inheritance <7>.
