The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Summary

Historic farmstead documented in late 19th century but no longer in existence

Monument Type(s):

  • FARMSTEAD (Late 19th century - 1880 AD to 1880 AD)

Full Description

This farm is recorded on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1877 <1> as noted during a 2005 survey of West Berkshire's historic farmsteads <2>. The farmhouse is shown to the east of the farmyard and the farmyard was surrounded by several buildings on three sides <1>. By the second Edition map of 1899 <4>, the farmhouse had been extended to the north, two buildings added west of the farmyard and more animal pens built within the farmyard. The farm appears to have remained largely the same until the Fifth Edition map of 1968 <5>. It was gone by 1999 <6>, possibly in relation to the expansion of AWE Aldermaston in the 1980s <7>.
