The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

This site is designated as being of national importance and is afforded additional protection. Consult West Berkshire Council's Archaeology team if more information or advice is needed.

Full Description

The former village school in Bucklebury consists of two elements, called School House and School House Cottage in the later part of the 20th century <3>. The listed building description <1> notes a 17th century timber-framed and brick building to which was added a 19th century school (not specifically mentioned in the listing). It is uncertain when the older cottage was first used as an educational establishment, although Millson's history <2> records that a school was in existence in 1865. Land was granted by the Hartley family in 1874 so the school could be enlarged, and the building was in use until 1968 <2>. The school was converted to two private residences in the 1970s <4>.

The GIS polygon is approximate, covering the two semi-detached buildings of different dates.
