The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Full Description

Kennet Orley is a Grade II listed red brick house built in 1909 by Sir Mervyn Macartney in a Free William and Mary style <1><2>. The contemporary rusticated gate piers are also listed. There have been some later additions and alterations to the buildings.

The house was apparently designed by the architect for himself; his brother also lived in West Berkshire in another of Macartney's country homes, Foxhold House (MWB17876). Kennet Orley and a further Macartney commission Woolhampton Court were both constructed within the designed landscape of Woolhampton Park <4>.

Some photographs and further information about the house were included in a 2016 planning application for alterations <6>.
