The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read
the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our

Summary
Documented location of water pump, probably of late 18th century date, used for keeping down dust on the road
Monument Type(s):
- PUMP (18th century - 1751 AD? to 1800 AD?)
Full Description
A pump is marked 'P' on the Second Edition Ordnance Survey mapping <1>, on the south side of the Bath Road near the junction with Northfield Road. It cannot be clearly seen on the First Edition map <2> but was probably one of a chain of water pumps put along the Bath Road at the end of the 18th century for watering the roads to keep the dust down <3>. It appears to have been removed some time in the 20th century, possibly by the 1920s as it is close to some of the recorded features in Harris's Thatcham Newtown excavations.
