The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

This site is designated as being of national importance and is afforded additional protection. Consult West Berkshire Council's Archaeology team if more information or advice is needed.

Full Description

The Old Rectory in Theale is a stone building of classical design with the inscription 'S. S. 1830' on its rainwater heads <1><4>. It is adjacent to the Holy Trinity church which was constructed in the 1820-30s with the funds of Sophia Sheppard, widow of the previous incumbent the Revd Thomas Sheppard <2>, so it seems likely that these are her initials on the rectory. The cost of the new church, rectory and also school was given as £39,000 <3>.

Both the rectory and its former coach house are Grade II listed buildings <1>. The Theale Local History Group recorded the rectory's architectural details as part of their survey of the village <5>, noting that perfect symmetry had been achieved through the use of some false windows.
