The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Full Description

112 Shaw Road is a Grade II listed brick building next to the river Lambourn in the post-medieval village of Shaw. It was built between 1817 and 1837 and was formerly the Old Dog Inn <1><2>. It became the village post office in the later 20th century <3> but was converted to residential use at the turn of the 21st century <4>.

Historical pub research indicates that the Old Dog was in operation in 1830 (from Pigot's directory) <5>.

A Historical Development Report prepared by Wessex Archaeology in 2016 ahead of proposed alterations to the property suggested that a fossilised 16th or 17th century timber-framed cottage may be contained within the extant structure. They suggest that this can be seen on 18th century maps and that this building was converted and possibly re-fronted in the early 19th century to become the Old Dog Inn <6>.
