House. Probably C.17 in origin and refronted C.18. Two storeys, stucco, with moulded eaves cornice and 3 attic dormers in tiled roof. Brick stacks. Five C.18-19 sash windows. Modern wood porch on 2 columns with dentilled cornice. At back on north is brick staircase projection, flanked by 2 gabled wings, one being stuccoed, the other late brick.
Interior: Probably C.17 staircase has ancient string and newels with renewed balusters. (Photograph in N.M.R.)

Full Description
No 34 London Road probably dates back to the 17th century, refronted in the 18th century. The Listed Building description considers that it was formerly the Manor House of Speenhamland <1>. The building is of two storeys with dormers, and is double fronted with five windows. There is an early 18th century staircase inside.
The Willis map of 1768 shows this house as freestanding with elaborate formal gardens at the rear and an axial tree-lined avenue on the opposite side of London Road <1><3>.
West Berkshire Museum has a photograph showing the frontage in the late 20th century <6>.
