The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Full Description

18 The Broadway in Speenhamland is a Grade II listed building that was once part of a coaching inn called the George and Pelican, this element probably being The Pelican. It has a stucco front of what might be a 17th century core <1>. A print of c 1825 (held by the NMR)indicates it previously formed part of a uniform five window range which included the site of No 16 <2>.

West Berkshire Museum has a 1910 photograph <3> showing the frontage; the shop was then occupied by E Lipscomb, Cycle Agent and Cycle Maker. The photograph shows only the ground and first floor; the first floor has two sash windows (1 over 1) over the shop and a bay window (2 over 2) over the side passage; the ground floor has a display window with an entrance on the right, next to a side passage with an arch of decorative ironwork (this is still present in the early 21st century).
