The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Full Description

41 The Street is a small single storey cottage which seems likely to have originally formed an northern extension to 42-43 The Street, a two storey sub-divided timber-framed house to which it is attached. Both are Grade II listed buildings <1>, previously listed at Grade III under a single entry <6>. The First Edition Ordnance Survey mapping <2> depicts these buildings, perhaps then divided into two dwellings rather than three, joined to a long range which runs at right angles from the north end of No 41. On the 3rd Epoch of 1911-12 <3>, the row is divided into three cottages, and the yard to the north of the long range is named as a Saw Mill.

Applications were approved in 1989 <4> to refurbish and improve the listed cottage and also convert the garage to a bedroom; photographs of the exterior of the house were taken by the Conservation Officer in 1989 <5>. The refurbishment since 1989 appear to have included replacing the old tiles.
