The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read
the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our
online HER enquiry form.

Full Description
No 19 The Broadway is a Grade II listed building in what was historically part of Speen parish, at the north end of Northbrook Street, Newbury. It is described as a late 18th century refronting of an older building. This was part of a redevelopment scheme which also included the adjacent buildings Nos 21 and 23 The Broadway, but a passageway was left in between, leading to a two storey brick range at the rear of No 19. The painted brick street frontage is of two storeys with dormers in the tile roof, and there is an original Georgian double bowed shop front <3> <4>.
The 1971 listed building description <1> notes that the property was formerly named Old Oak Parlour, and Reading Libraries hold a photograph of the Old Oak Parlour Hotel and Restaurant, 19 The Broadway, Newbury, in about 1937 <6>.
