The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Monument Type(s):

Full Description

Bucklebury Cemetery appears on the Second Edition Ordnance Survey mapping <1> as a square plot of land on Bucklebury Common, with a small rectangular building, a mortuary chapel, at its centre. The cemetery has been enlarged <2> and is still in use in the 21st century for the burial of inhumations and cremations of people of all faiths or none <3>.

The chapel and its original cemetery, within a square boundary wall, were added to the Local List of Heritage Assets in 2017 <6>. It was built in 1885 of rendered concrete with a clay tiled roof, and is largely unaltered, retaining its original fixtures and fittings.
