The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read
the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our
online HER enquiry form.

Full Description
A turnpike is shown on Rocque's 1761 map <1> with a schematic building. This may be the same cottage or pair of cottages marked on the First Edition Ordnance Survey mapping <2>; a barrier across the road is also shown. Turnpike Cottages were demolished in the mid 20th century.
The National Record of Industrial Monuments <4> notes that this was the site of a Regency toll house, demolished in 1964, although J Kenneth Major recorded it in 1967 (only to note that it had already gone) <7>. A photograph from the collection of J Irving in West Berkshire Museum <9> shows the building in a derelict state. The toll gate was apparently taken down in 1878.
