The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read
the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our

Full Description
Froud's Lane Overbridge was assessed as a component of the Great Western mainline <1>. It was recommended for listing by English Heritage as a relatively unaltered skew road bridge by Brunel <2> but the Secretary of State decided that Frouds Lane Bridge did not reach the level of architectural or historic interest required to be added to the statutory list <3>. It dates from c1845-47, placing it in the secondary heroic age of railway building and is a well preserved semi-elliptical bridge. However it was considered to be a standard design rather than exceptional, and one that it is all but identical to the listed Appleford and Culham Bridges in Oxfordshire. A planning application to demolish and replace it was approved in 2012.
