The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Full Description

The overbridge was listed at Grade II in 2012 in acknowledgement of its unique design, engineering and material interest and historic interest <1> following assessment <2><3>. It is the only example of a Brunel single-span segmental arched bridge with raking abutments, built c 1845-7 as part of the Berkshire and Hampshire Railway by an assistant engineer to Brunel's specification. The unusual single arch appears to have been designed for aesthetic reasons since it is not necessary on engineering grounds <1>.

The bridge is included in a gazetteer of structures potentially affected by electrification of the Great Western Main Line <2>.
