The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Full Description

A row of four cottages is shown on the First Edition Ordnance Survey mapping <1> adjacent to Wharf Bridge over the Kennet and Avon Canal. Due to their position near the waterway, it is likely that they were used for accommodation or business purposes in association with canal traffic. It is not clear whether they predate the construction of the canal or navigation, although they are aligned with the road.

A Heritage Assessment in connection with a planning application for the area <2> noted "the terrace of 19th Century properties that constitute ‘Wharf Cottages’ ... This terrace of four modest, two storey brick cottages has a steeply pitched plain tiled roof and a dentiled cornice detail at the eaves." Wharf Cottages are unlisted.
