The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Full Description

The former Reading Room in Shaw village is shown as a building on the First Edition Ordnance Survey mapping of 1880-81 <1>, but not labelled as such until the Second Epoch of 1899 <2>. It is unclear whether it was originally constructed as a reading room.

According to one source <3>, the Woodspeen East Reading Rooms were located between Hutton Close and Shaw Bridge, and the first meeting was held on 20 September 1872. The rooms were part of a working men's club.

92 and 94 Shaw Road is a two storey building with red brick walls, a tiled roof and sash windows <4>. It is marked as a Reading Room on the Second <2> to Fourth Edition (1933-4) maps <5>, after which time it had been divided into two dwellings <6>.
