The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Monument Type(s):

  • RAILWAY BRIDGE (Late 19th century to Early 21st century - 1893 AD to 2013 AD)

Full Description

A bridge over a footpath is shown on the First Edition Ordnance Survey mapping <1>; the path links the 18th century mansion of Purley Park with St Mary's Church. Information received from Rights of Way officers <2> <3> suggest that the bridge was created for the house's owner Major Storer in c1840. There were iron steps down to it from Purley Park house and an ornamental coadestone fountain.

The underbridge was not included in a 2012 gazetteer <4>, although other nearby bridges were described.
