The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Summary

Former location of 19th century railway bridge over road in Boxford

Monument Type(s):

  • RAILWAY BRIDGE (Late 19th century to Late 20th century - 1898 AD to 1976 AD)

Full Description

A bridge at this location was built as part of the Lambourn Valley Railway in 1898, and is shown on historic mapping from the OS Second edition of 1899 <1>; it is shown on subsequent historic mapping up to the Fifth edition map of 1976. The bridge was demolished following the removal of the trackbed in 1976.

In 2007 a planning application for the erection of a new house necessitated the removal of a short stretch of disused railway embankment and the demolition of the brick-built walls of the bridge. A photographic and descriptive record of the historic structure was therefore made prior to its demolition <2>. The bridge had been partly demolished following the line closure in 1973, and in 2007 was poorly preserved and much overgrown. Only on the northern side of the road was the supporting brickwork standing to its full height; on the south only the lower ten courses of brickwork remained, and this now serves as a revetment for the garden of 'Holdways'.
