The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read
the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our
online HER enquiry form.

Summary
Former location of 19th century or older inn and public house, its site developed for a late 20th century hotel
Monument Type(s):
- INN (19th century to Late 20th century - Present - 1801 AD? to 1990 AD)
- PUBLIC HOUSE (19th century to Late 20th century - Present - 1814 AD to 1990 AD)
Full Description
The Hare and Hounds public house is shown on the Ordnance Survey First edition map of 1877 <1>; on the Fifth edition map of 1970 it is shown as a hotel. Historical pub research indicates that a public house with this name was in operation in 1830 (from Pigot's directory) <2>. The Hare and Hounds was also marked on the 1809 Ordnance Survey Drawing <3> and the Padworth enclosure map of 1814 <7>, and might be one of the buildings schematically depicted on Rocque's mid 18th century map <4>. It appears also have been classified in some late 19th century directories as being an Aldermaston establishment, due to the closeness of several parish boundaries <5>.
An application was approved in 1990 for the demolition of the public house and erection of an hotel <6>.
