The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read
the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our
online HER enquiry form.

Summary
Unlisted 19th century cottage adjacent to Cobblers Lock on the Kennet and Avon Canal
Monument Type(s):
Full Description
A cottage on the north side of Cobbler's Lock and at the western end of Freeman's Marsh is shown on historic Ordnance Survey mapping <1>, and named as the Lock House by the later 20th century <2>. The canal lock was constructed between 1798 and 1799 and the Kennet and Avon Canal opened in 1810, so it is likely that the house's origins were contemporary with this period. It is drawn on the Tithe Map of 1849 <3>.
There are several images of the cottage on the Hungerford Virtual Museum's website <4>, including it as a semi-derelict building in 2015 and after renovation in 2022.
