The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Full Description

A farmstead is marked but not named on the First Edition Ordnance Survey mapping, surveyed in 1878 <1> on the north side of Love Lane, opposite Shaw House. It was not recorded during a 2005 survey of West Berkshire's historic farmsteads <2>.

Historical research carried out in connection with the restoration of Shaw House <3> noted that a former farmhouse, probable barn and stableyard to the northwest of the mansion were possibly on the site of the medieval manor. This yard was swept away under changes made by Henry Eyre (after 1851, and before 1878). The farm was moved to the north side of Love Lane, outside the walls of Shaw House. It seems to have been deliberately sited in an old chalk pit, marked as such on the 1st Edition OS <1>, and shown on the Ordnance Survey Drawing of 1808 <4>. A single building appears to be drawn within the pit in 1808, although the older farmyard is also still present at this time.

The 5th Epoch OS mapping of 1968 <5> shows that a Milk Depot was based at the farm on Love Lane. Planning permission was granted in 1982 <6> for residential units at 'Stable Farm', presumably leading to the demolition of the agricultural buildings. The development on the site was called Stable Court, though an adjacent dwelling, probably built in the 1990s but on the site of an earlier building, is called The Old Dairy House.
