The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Full Description
Fisherman's Cottage is marked but not named on the First Edition Ordnance Survey mapping <1> in Fisherman's Lane, which leads from the village of Aldermaston towards various streams and drains feeding into the river Kennet. The cottage was extended at the end of the 20th century, but the original part is of brick with a tiled roof and dormer windows. The blue brick diaper pattern is of a similar style to that seen on other buildings in Aldermaston village, and it is probable that this cottage was an estate building of Aldermaston Park, used for accommodation or for activities associated with country sports. It does not appear to be marked on the 1806 Ordnance Survey Drawing <2> and may have been built in the mid 19th century.
