The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Summary

Former location of a railway signal box from the early to the late 20th century

Monument Type(s):

  • SIGNAL BOX (Edwardian to Late 20th century - 1910 AD to 1978 AD)

Full Description

The Newbury Middle signal box is shown on the Third epoch OS map of 1911 <1> (presumably to control access to and from the Goods Yard) and the building appears on the Fifth epoch OS map of 1967 <2>. Newbury Middle box was opened in 1910 <3>. The box was presumably demolished soon after the introduction of colour light signalling in the late 1970s.

An aerial photograph of 1928 <4> shows the signal box in the lower middle of the photograph, below Cheap Street railway bridge.
