The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Summary

Former location of late 19th century signal box on the Great Western railway line near a siding to Calcot Mill

Monument Type(s):

  • SIGNAL BOX (Late 19th century to Mid 20th century - 1878 AD to 1963 AD?)

Full Description

The Berkshire Industrial Archaeology Group gazetteer <1> noted the former existence of a siding from the Great Western Railway to Calcot Mill which was in operation from 1876 to 1928, when the siding was removed. South of the junction of the siding with the main line a signal box is shown on the First Edition Ordnance Survey mapping <3> and on subsequent historic maps until the 4th Epoch. An annotation in the BIAG record next to a schematic plan suggests that this box closed in 1963 <1>; it is not marked on the 5th Epoch OS map of 1965 <4>.
