The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Full Description

A house and shops numbered as 5, 7 and 9 Market Place, were listed at Grade III in the Newbury Borough list <1> and described as being of two storeys, with a 19th century stucco front on an older house.

The building is shown but not named on the late 19th century Town Plan <2>, and No 5 is marked on the 5th Epoch Ordnance Survey of 1967 <3>. Numbering for the Market Place is odd on the west side and even on the east side.

Land between Bartholomew Street and the Market Place and Cheap Street was extensively redeveloped in the 1970s to become the Kennet Centre. Nos 5 and 7 were recommended for delisting <1>, and the group was demolished.
