The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Full Description

No. 47 Northbrook Street is on an unpublished list of buildings that were designed by the architect James H Money <1>. For many years it was a shop operated by Mr Cary. During its construction it was reported that some 'interesting remains of a pile structure' were found <2>.

Research into the businesses run by Alphonse Cary indicated that he had first opened a shop at 45 Northbrook Street in the 1870s which was extended to 47 Northbrook Street by 1877 <3>. The new building at 47-48 Northbrook Street was designed by James H Money and constructed in 1882-3, opening on 22/03/1883. The shop continued at 47-48 Northbrook Street until the 1960s.
