The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read
the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our
online HER enquiry form.
This site is designated as being of national importance and is afforded additional protection. Consult West Berkshire Council's Archaeology team if more information or advice is needed.

Full Description
The Registered Park description for Aldermaston Court notes that a level lawn extends to the south of the mansion, and that it 'formerly contained huts and other buildings connected with the Second World War use and subsequent development', but in 1998 was largely open, with nearly all these buildings having been removed <1>. The 5th Epoch Ordnance Survey mapping of 1971 <2> shows at least two dozen rectangular buildings arranged in straight lines and rows. Only one small hut and a larger building to its east are shown in a 1999 air photograph <3>. The larger building is named as Oxford House in the later 20th century.
Information submitted in 2016 with a major planning application for the park of Aldermaston Court <4> included photographs of Oxford House although its origins are not clear. It is described as a long, rectangular office building of a post-war appearance and is thought to have been built as part of the Atomic Weapons Establishment occupation of the site in the 1950s.
