Summary

Unlisted Second World War prefabricated semi-circular building, one of few surviving elements of the wartime airfield

Full Description

A desk-based assessment of land at Membury airfield <1> identified two Nissen huts, part of the surviving elements of Membury Airfield’s Second World War infrastructure.

One at c SU 30235 75858 was described as being of 24 feet span while the other was a smaller 16ft span model. Both structures were in use as storage facilities, with the 16ft span model having some modern breeze block internal divisions, although they were both in a poor state of preservation <1>.

The hut is shown on the 5th Epoch Ordnance Survey mapping <2>, north of Membury Camp hillfort and can be identified in a 2003 <3> and 2010 air photograph <4>. It is also depicted on early 21st century OS mapping <5>, and is c 50 feet in length.
