The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Summary

Former administrative building and later Civil Engineering Squadron headquarters, possibly the only surviving structure from the World War II airfield

Monument Type(s):

  • MILITARY BUILDING (Second World War - 1939 AD? to 1945 AD?)
  • MILITARY OFFICE (Mid 20th century to Late 20th century - Present - 1951 AD to 1983 AD)
  • OFFICE (Late 20th century - Present - 1997 AD? to 2006 AD)

Full Description

An irregular brick building comprising three single storey rectangular ranges. The building loosely corresponds with the footprint of an earlier RAF building and it has been interpreted as possibly pre-dating the USAF occupation of the site in the early 1950s. The fact that the building is constructed of brick and was the only building to feature regularly spaces piers along its length may support this conclusion as it does not fit the style of the rapidly constructed buildings which were erected on the cleared RAF site. During the USAF occupation the building was likely used as administrative offices, but during the later GLCM phase it was used as the headquarters of the Civil Engineering Squadron. The building was extensively renovated during these later two phases of use. Most recently this building is recorded as being used as offices and a store <1>.
