    C.1850. Three storeys, blue brick. Three sash windows with Tudoresque drip moulds in stone and mullions tracery. Cornice over ground floor. Stone parapet with ornamental gable etc.

Full Description

A building numbered as 134 Bartholomew Street was listed at Grade II in pre 1980s liste for Newbury Borough <1> and described as being of three storeys, in blue brick with an ornamental gable.

The building is shown and named on the late 19th century Town Plan <2> as a Savings Bank, and No 134 is marked on the 5th Epoch Ordnance Survey of 1967 <3>. According to the Borough Museum survey <4>, the building was formerly the Guildhall Club.

Land between Bartholomew Street and the Market Place and Cheap Street was extensively redeveloped in the 1970s. This building, along with others from 119-137 and 143-147 Bartholomew Street, was demolished when the area was rebuilt as the Kennet Centre. No 134 was not recommended for delisting <1>, and the group was demolished.

West Berkshire Museum has a photograph <5> showing Bartholomew Street in the early 20th century, with the Savings Bank building in the right foreground.
