The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Former location of a well and adjacent building of at least 19th century date, possibly associated with common edge settlement but demolished or altered when a larger house was built on the site

Monument Type(s):

  • HUT? (Mid to Late 19th century to Late 19th century - 1850 AD? to 1899 AD?)
  • WELL HEAD? (Mid to Late 19th century to Late 19th century - 1850 AD? to 1899 AD?)

Full Description

A small building and an adjacent well are marked on the Epoch 1 OS Map of 1880 <1>. It is unclear whether the building which measures c 7m x 5m is a dwelling or a structure associated with the well. However it was demolished or perhaps incorporated into the farmhouse of Limberlost Farm by the time of the Epoch 2 map of 1899 <2>. The well might have been associated with common edge settlement along the northern fringes of Crookham Common, although no buildings are marked here on the 1817 Ordnance Survey Drawing <3>.
