The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Full Description

Excavations took place at 140 Bartholomew Street intermittently between September 1971 to October 1974. Nine different periods of activity were identified and Period 3 (III) was dated to the early 12th century.

This period had the earliest evidence of structures on the site <1>. Many small stake impressions were identified, varying between 50 to 80 mm in diameter. The positions of two huts, 10 to 12 feet wide, were clearly indicated and there may have been a third, although they may not have been contemporary with each other. Initially dated to the end of the 11th century and suggested to have been amongst some of Newbury's earliest buildings <1>, they were later dated to the early 12th century based on pottery finds <4>.
