The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read
the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our

Full Description
Excavations took place at 140 Bartholomew Street intermittently between September 1971 to October 1974. Nine different periods of activity were identified and Period 5 (V) was dated to the 13th century.
This was the first period to use square dressed timbers, and a fragment of chalk floor and some daub were also found. A line of rectangular stake holes were identified running perpendicular to the frontage and another line at a right angle to it. Deep post holes or pits were associated with the second line of stake holes, some containing packing stones. The structure was estimated to have been 3 by 9.75 m in size. A pitched tile hearth was excavated towards the western end and a subrectangular depression adjacent to it was suggested to have been for baking <1> and, later, a possible bakery <4>.
