The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Wine Cellar Bridge, over the River Kennet, is marked and named on a map of Hungerford and Eddington dating from 1831 <1>. It is not marked on the Ordnance Survey Drawing of Hungerford of 1817 <2>, the Hungerford enclosure map of 1820 <3> or the Hungerford tithe map of 1849 <4>. It is marked, but not named, on the First and Second Edition OS maps of 1879-85 <5> and 1899-1900 <6>, respectively, but had been moved further south-east by the Third Edition map of 1911-24 <7> onwards <8>.

The inclusion of the bridge on the 1831 map in the Berkshire Record Office was first noticed during research by Avon Archaeology in the preparation of a desk-based assessment in July 2022 <10><11>.
