Full Description
A skatepark called Wheelies opened in Newbury in December 1977 <1><2><3>. It was the country's first indoor skatepark <2> and the first all wooden skatepark <3>. It was located in one of the former Elliott's buildings on West Street <2><4> and designed by John Norgate <3>. It was the home of a skateboarding team sponsored by Toomer's, the Toomer Zoomers, which also ran a large skate shop on site <3>.
Wheelies closed in around 1978 <3> and the site was redeveloped for offices in the early 1980s <5>.
