The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read
the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our
online HER enquiry form.

Full Description
An evaluation took place in 1995 in an area north of the railway and St Michael's Road, Newbury <1>. Within Trench 2, the earliest deposit was Layer 202, which was entirely composed of animal charnel and thought to be relatively modern. It was overlain by 2.35m of modern demolition debris and refuse, and was not fully excavated on health and safety grounds. It was interpreted as a 20th century abattoir dump or something similar.
On the Fifth Edition OS map of 1967 <2>, the building to the north of the site is marked as a waste paper depot. Animal glue made from animal bones is used in the paper making industry.
The GIS point is the approximate centre of Trench 2.
