The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Monument Type(s):

  • BOILER HOUSE (Second World War to Early 21st century - 1942 AD to 2018 AD?)

Full Description

Boiler House 10E1, within Character Area B1 at AWE Burghfield, was designed in October 1941, built in 1942, and recorded ahead of its demolition and replacement in 2014 <1>. It was originally known as the Economic Boiler House as it contained coal-fired Economic Boilers, but these may have been converted to burn oil by 1957 and were replaced in 1977 by new oil boilers.

At the time of the building recording, the West Boiler House complex consisted of a main boiler house with various annexes of different dates (the earliest dating from 1942), a 50 by 300 feet, walled coal storage yard, a bunded heavy oil tank enclosure and a Generator House (10F11). The Generator House was also recorded.

The complex had been demolished by 2018 <3>.
