The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read
the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our

Full Description
Excavations took place at 140 Bartholomew Street intermittently between September 1971 to October 1974. Nine different periods of activity were identified and Period 6 (VI) was dated to the late 13th to early 14th century.
This period featured the earliest building to have foundations. 61 to 76 cm wide wall footings of flint set into chalk were found, possibly for a timber, rather than flint or masonry, building 15m long. Traces of a hearth, a well (Well 1) used until the late 19th century and postholes possibly for a barn were excavated, and the period dated by finds of coins of Henry II to Edward I <1>. Late 13th century stone mortars were also recovered <2>.
The GIS point marks the location of the well.
