The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read
the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our
online HER enquiry form.
Part of the Y plan of Newbury town centre, consisting of some of the earliest elements of the town
CHEAP STREET FORMS PART OF THE Y PLAN OF THE TOWN CENTRE AND CONSISTS OF SOME OF THE EARLIEST ELEMENTS OF THE TOWN, ALTHOUGH DIFFERENT SHAPES OF GROUPS OF TENEMENTS SUGGESTS THE TOWN WAS LAID OUT IN SEVERAL STAGES. PLOTS TO E OF CHEAP ST ALSO EARLY, ALTHOUGH PLOTS ON ST MARY'S HILL MAY BE LATER ADDITION.
A 1917 report <1> describes many yards off Cheap Street in the early 20th century.
Cheap Street to the south of its junction with Market Street (itself a later insertion) was named St Mary's Hill. Many historic buildings in Cheap Street were demolished in the 20th century, including the St Mary's Almshouses. In the 1970s, the west side of Cheap Street from No 21 on the corner of Market Street to No 37 adjacent to the Market Place, was redeveloped as part of the Kennet Centre. All buildings were removed apart from those at 33-35 Cheap Street.
West Berkshire Museum has a photograph showing the southern part of the Market Place and the northern part of Cheap Street in the mid 20th century; the north side of the Market Place at night, in the early 20th century; the east side of the Market Place on market day, in the mid 20th century; and the southern part of Cheap Street in the early 20th century <9>.
