The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

OBSERVED DURING WATCHING BRIEF. LARGE AREA WHERE CLAY REMOVED. SEVERAL LARGE DITCHES AND OTHER SMALLER FEATURES ALSO ON SITE. VERY FEW ARTEFACTS FOUND. MODERN POTTERY, SOME 13TH CENTURY POTTERY, A MEDIEVAL BROOCH, AND SOME SLAG <1>.

FIVE DITCHES APPEAR TO CROSS THE SITE. VARY IN SIZE BETWEEN QUITE SMALL TO 2M DEEP. WHETHER DITCHES PRE DATE CLAY PIT IS NOT CLEAR. PIT OBSERVED DURING WATCHING BRIEF, REPORT ON FILE. NO APPARENT CONTENTS. NOT EXAMINED CLOSELY BECAUSE OF DANGER OF SLUMPING <1>.

Several site visits were undertaken in 1988 during the groundworks of a new building at Ravenshear Home on the west side of Argyle Road. Large features of up to 2m deep were found that were suggested to be the result of clay digging. The site appeared to have been cut by several linear features as well, but it was difficult to tell whether or not they predated the clay pit. One of these ditches contained a distinctive layer of small fragments of tile. A 13th century brooch, some coarse 13th century pottery and several pieces of slag were also found.
