The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Full Description

LAND IN THATCHAM WAS GRANTED TO KING EDGAR IN 971 AND BY THE TIME OF DOMESDAY WAS THE CENTRE OF A ROYAL ESTATE AND MAY HAVE HAD PROTO-URBAN STATUS. TOWN WAS PROBABLY LAID OUT IN THE LATE C13TH WHEN THE BOROUGH OF THATCHAM CAME INTO EXISTENCE, BUT THIS HAD CEASED TO EXIST BY C16TH. IN THE C18TH THATCHAM REVERTED TO BEING A VILLAGE. DURING C19TH THATCHAM NEWTOWN ACTED AS A FOCUS FOR LATER HOUSING.

Astill <10> identified an area of archaeological interest, and this is used for the GIS polygon for this record of the historic core. Little archaeological work was carried out in this part of Thatcham before the 1980s, and many earlier buildings were demolished without recording.

Several manors have been linked to Thatcham by Barfield <3> and Gray <11>: Crookham, Midgham, Colthrop, Henwick, Chamberhouse and Greenham as well as Thatcham itself. There were 16 (or possibly 17) manors in the Hundred of Thatcham <3>.

West Berkshire Museum has a photograph showing Thatcham Newtown in 1918 <44>.
