MEDIEVAL VILLAGE FIRST MENTIONED IN DOMESDAY BOOK AS STRADFIELD. Placename means "OPEN LAND TRAVERSED BY ROMAN ROAD"
MEDIEVAL VILLAGE FIRST MENTIONED IN DOMESDAY BOOK AS STRADFIELD. This placename means "open land traversed by a Roman road" <1>. On the Hampshire side of the Roman road are Stratfield Saye and Turgis. The manor was held by Ralf Mortimer in 1086.
Mortimer West End was once a tithing of Stratfield Mortimer, but became a separate ecclesiastical parish in 1870 <2>.
Several publications by the local history society give details especially of post-medieval Mortimer.
