The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

This site is designated as being of national importance and is afforded additional protection. Consult West Berkshire Council's Archaeology team if more information or advice is needed.

Full Description

Nos 42 and 43 The Street are a pair of dwellings created through the sub-division of a timber-framed and brick house, once a single dwelling <1>. Both halves are designated at Grade II under one listed building description <1>, though they were previously listed at Grade III with the attached northern cottage of No 41 The Street as well <2>. No 41 is a smaller single storey building which seems likely to have originally formed an extension. To the south, the tiled roof of No 43 is half-hipped.

The First Edition Ordnance Survey mapping <3> depicts these buildings, perhaps then divided into two dwellings rather than three, joined to a long range which runs at right angles from the north end of No 41. On the 3rd Epoch of 1911-12 <4>, the row is divided into three cottages, and the yard to the north of the long range is named as a Saw Mill.
