The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our online HER enquiry form.

Full Description

A single pond is shown on the First Edition Ordnance Survey mapping <1> where a bank has been constructed across a small stream running northeast from Inkpen Common. A house adjacent to the bank was named 'The Willows' on historic OS maps through the early 20th century, but called 'New Mill' subsequently. The pond is marked as a fishpond on the 3rd Epoch OS <2>. No pond is shown on this stretch of the stream on Rocque's 18th century map <3> or on the Ordnance Survey Drawing of 1817 <4>. Major includes New Mill, Inkpen in his gazetteer of Berkshire water mills, noting that the mill had 'Gone' but a 'large mill pond and fine house remain' <5>. The pond appears to have been used as part of the designed landscape in the 20th century.

The name of the watercourse in the 21st century is Peartree Bottom stream.
