The West Berkshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is the primary index of the physical remains of past human activity in the unitary authority of West Berkshire Council. Limited elements of the West Berkshire HER are available online via the Heritage Gateway, therefore it is not suitable for use in desk-based studies associated with development, planning and land-use changes, and does not meet the requirements of paragraph 194 of the National Planning Policy Framework (2021: 56). Please read
the important guidance on the use of the West Berkshire HER data. For these purposes and all other commercial enquiries, please contact the Archaeology team and complete our

Full Description
Froom describes Avington I as one of two major sites he had located in the Avington District, located on the low gravel terrace a few yards from and just above the flood plain, with a given grid reference of SU 374678 <1>. However he doubted whether organic remains would have survived as a major drainage channel had been cut along the edge of the flood plain. Artefacts had been found in an area of c 40 yards square in the corner of the field, but most came from a small area within the general scatter. Finds included approximately 40 cores, core rejuvenating flakes, a tranchet axe sharpening flake, numerous scrapers, blade segments, basal rejects, tip rejects, a few entire blades and many waste flakes.
